Sudhan Thomas, president of the Jersey City Board of Education, emailed members on Wednesday saying he plans to introduce a resolution at their Thursday censuring fellow board member Joan Terrell Paige for an online comment she tweeted about the Dec. 10 murders of two Chassidim and three non-Jewish victims at the JC Kosher Supermarket.
Thomas is also planning to ask for Terrel’s resignation at the meeting, according to his email.
“I have come to this conclusion after a lot of review … but importantly in the continuum of the strong sentiments expressed by the elected political leadership across Jersey City, Hudson County and the State of New Jersey,” Thomas wrote his members.
And now, possibly the most quoted anti-Semitic trope in the past few weeks, penned by Ms. Terrell:
“There is no room for any kind of hate or bigotry in Jersey City,” Thomas said, after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Mayor Steven Fulop have both said Terrell must resign.
Democratic state Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, who represents Jersey City and lives where the attacks took place, called terrell’s message “clearly insensitive and inappropriate.” She sent an email to the Associated Press on Tuesday, saying, “I understand that there may be tensions between certain communities over property, but this is not the time for such conversations. Last week, lives were lost in a brutal attack in our community. During this time of grieving and laying people to rest, I ask that we allow families the respect to mourn.”
