The leader of the new Syrian regime, interim President Ahmed Al Shara’a, is set to meet this week with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in his first visit to Amman, Reuters reported.
Al Shara’a is expected to arrive in the Jordanian capital on Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties between Amman and Damascus along with talks on border security and commercial ties.
The visit follows similar trips to Saudi Arabia and Turkey following the conquest of the Syrian capital by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist revolutionary group led by Al Shara’a, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
The new Syrian leader has also been invited to attend an emergency Arab League summit on Gaza, set for March 4 in Cairo.
Al Shara’a officially began his reign as president on January 29, 2025, following the ouster of the government led by former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled with his family to Russia.
Jordan has also pledged to help Syria rebuild after more than a decade of civil war, along with providing Damascus with electricity and gas.
