Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier-General Amir Hatami arrived in Damascus on Sunday for a two-day visit, IRNA reported. “We hope to have a productive role in the reconstruction of Syria,” Hatami said upon his arrival in Syria, Fars News reported.
Hatami was welcomed at Damascus international airport by senior Syrian military and defense officials, Iran envoy to Syria Javad Torkabadi, and Iranian military attaché to Damascus Brigadier General Alinejad.
The Iranian defense minister is scheduled to hold a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Reuters noted on Sunday that more than 1,000 Iranians, including senior members of the elite Revolutionary Guards, have been killed in Syria since 2012.
