New South Wales mounted police, January 17, 2006.

A caravan filled with explosives and a note containing addresses of Jewish individuals and institutions was discovered by a local resident in Dural, northwest Sydney, on January 19.

A note that was found inside the van included addresses of local Jews and a synagogue and a message that read, “[Expletive] the Jews.”

Authorities are treating the discovery as a credible terror threat, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the plot. New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson confirmed on Wednesday that the investigation is being taken seriously, with all leads being pursued.

Hudson reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.

NSW Police are working closely with the Australian Federal Police, NSW Crime Commission, ASIO, Victoria Police, and the Queensland Police Service to investigate the incident.

This incident followed a series of antisemitic attacks in Sydney, including a childcare center near a synagogue in the city that was set on fire and vandalized with antisemitic graffiti on January 21. Four days earlier, a house that had been owned by the co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin, was set ablaze and smeared with graffiti. Also, two men have been charged in connection with a separate attack on a synagogue in Newtown, which was spray-painted with red swastikas and set on fire on January 11.

Federal police suspect that foreign actors are recruiting local criminals to attack Sydney’s Jewish communities. Since December, there have been escalating acts of violence, including cars set on fire, a synagogue burned down, and antisemitic graffiti painted on buildings and vehicles.
