One US Capitol Police officer was shot, not seriously, Monday afternoon at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, DC. The shooter was taken into custody, Capitol police reported. According to CNN, one person tried to enter the White House illegally.
A US Capitol Police source told CBC News that the shooter was being transported to hospital. There are no additional suspects.
DC Police tweeted that the shooting was a single, isolated incident and that the threat to the public had been lifted.
Emergency vehicles packed the street and the plaza on the eastern side of the building. Armed police cordoned off the streets around the building. The area was full of tourists who were there to spend Easter and the Cherry Blossom Festival.
A work crew on the north side of the Supreme Court building, across the street from the scene of the shooting, was requested to move away as a precaution.
