GOP Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana was said to be in critical condition after surgery at 1:30 pm following a gunshot wound in the hip during an attack by a political extremist while practicing for this week’s annual Congressional charity baseball game.
He is hospitalized at Medstar Washington Hospital, a Level One Trauma Center in the U.S. capital, where he was listed in stable condition earlier in the day.
Scalise and three others were shot by James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, a former volunteer with the political campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
A Congressional aide and two Capitol Police officers were also wounded, but are reported to be in good condition.
Scalise spoke with his wife on the phone before he went into surgery, and was said to be in good spirits. He is the House Majority Whip and it was for that reason there was a significant armed security presence at the baseball practice.
