The mammoth Procter & Gamble household products company announced this weekend that it is issuing a recall for some 30 aerosol spray hair products due to a cancer-causing chemical ingredient.

Other brands likewise issued a recall for similar items. The affected products are packaged in aerosol cans,” the company said in its statement.

An assortment of dry shampoos and dry conditioners are being recalled that could contain benzene, which can cause leukemia and blood disorders, the company said.

“Following recent reports that indicated traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products, we began a review of our total portfolio of aerosol products. While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the company said.

“We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the consumers who use our products and the quality of the products we ship.”

Products from brands such as Herbal Essence and Pantene, Hair Food, Old Spice and Aussie were among those named in the recall.

“To date, The Procter & Gamble Company has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall,” the company said, adding that it was “conducted this recall out of an abundance of caution.
