Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth welcomes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Pentagon, February 5, 2025.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated the deep and enduring alliance between Israel and the United States during his visit to the Pentagon on Wednesday. Speaking with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has “no greater friend than the United States,” while also highlighting the mutual benefits of their partnership. He said that, by confronting radicalism and terror, both nations are not only safeguarding their own security but also working together to defeat common enemies, often described as anti-American forces.

The statement made by Secretary Hegseth, declaring that the United States has no greater ally than Israel, is a reversal of the usual dynamic in these discussions. Typically, Israeli leaders like Prime Minister Netanyahu would express that Israel has no greater ally than the United States, acknowledging America’s vital support.
This shift in language could signify a deeper, reciprocal recognition of the strength and importance of the US-Israel relationship, with both nations now equally emphasizing their mutual commitment and shared interests. It’s an interesting turn of events that may reflect the growing depth and complexity of their alliance, acknowledging that the US values Israel as much as Israel values its partnership with America.

Netanyahu underscored Israel’s commitment to self-defense, noting that despite the challenges, Israel is willing to shoulder the burden of protecting its own borders. However, he also acknowledged that in the fight against shared enemies, the victories of one country ultimately benefit the other.

In addressing the ongoing issues related to Gaza, Secretary Hegseth drew attention to the need for creative and innovative solutions, echoing the sentiments of both President Donald Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister, emphasizing the importance of thinking outside the box to resolve long-standing conflicts.

TRANSCRIPT

Pete Hegseth: It’s great to have you here, Prime Minister Netanyahu. It’s a moment to reflect on the long history of cooperation between our nations.

Benjamin Netanyahu: Thank you, Pete. We certainly do have a long memory, and it’s important to me that our relationship continues to endure and grow. We’ll continue to build our defense industrial base, and we’re committed to supplying munitions that help in eradicating the radical enemies we both face.

Pete Hegseth:: Absolutely. And I think it’s clear to anyone who’s watching that Israel has no greater friend than the United States, and I believe the United States also has no better friend than Israel. What makes this alliance so unique, though?

Benjamin Netanyahu: Well, it’s different from many of our allies. We’ve never hesitated to fight our enemies alone when needed. Israel is willing to shoulder the burden of its own defense, but together, we confront the forces of radicalism, terrorism, and those who wish harm to both our nations. They call us “the small Satan” and you “the great Satan,” but we simply stand in their way. By confronting these enemies, we aren’t just protecting ourselves but protecting each other.

Pete Hegseth:: Right, by fighting these shared enemies, your victory is our victory. The challenges we face are monumental, but our commitment to each other has never wavered.

Benjamin Netanyahu: Exactly. And we’re well ahead in the pursuit of our war goals. We have a long-term vision of achieving security and peace. When it comes to Gaza, it’s time for a different approach.

Pete Hegseth: I agree. The definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over, expecting different results. It’s clear the President and you are willing to think outside the box and explore new, dynamic solutions to problems that have seemed intractable for years.

Benjamin Netanyahu: Absolutely, Pete. We’re open to creative solutions. And, as you know, the U.S. Department of Defense stands ready to look at all options moving forward.

Pete Hegseth: It’s a tough but necessary conversation. We’re in this together, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we can continue to strengthen this alliance.
