In the old days when the kids were younger, we would always try to figure out what to do on Chol HaMoed. But truthfully, the key was not to get caught in humongous traffic jams.
In Beit Shemesh we had the Rock and Soul Festival which I usually performed in. So, then we would not go on a trip during the day. Sometimes we would go to the old city of Jerusalem to be “oleh l’regel.” It never ceased to amaze me how many people would go to the old city on Chol HaMoed to go to the Kotel.
Now if we wanted to continue on the music theme there were three other options. One was to be at the Ma’arat HaMachpelah where they had musical concerts in Hebron. Sometimes you could go to the moshav in order to hear Carlebach music. Sometimes you could go to Safed (Tzfat) for the Klezmer festival. There were plenty of musical options. But what you did not want to do was get caught in traffic. That was the key! Have a great Succot!
