Why is it so important to report a hate crime or hate incident?
Hate affects not only the individual but also the community. If it happens to you most likely it will happen to others in your community. Hate crime and hate incidents strike at the heart of our society. Our country, constitution, and national character are based on tolerance and respect for the rights and needs of the individual. Hate crimes and hate incidents directly attack those founding principles; breeding fear, distrust, and uncertainty in the community.
If you or someone you know have been a victim of hate, no matter how trivial, immediately report it to your local law enforcement agency or seek assistance from a government or community based organization. Write down the hate language that was directed at you or the victim by the offender. Save any evidence that may assist in the investigation and prosecution of the person(s), such as letters, photos, recordings, texting, etc. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. The public’s cooperation, whether you are a victim or witness, is often essential in solving hate crimes.
