Ohel Sara, a new seminary for women who’ve just completed high school or learning in Israel, will open in October. The program, to be housed at the Young Israel of Los Angeles, already has an enrollment of 19 students from outside L.A. – in addition to local students. Ohel Sara offers a dormitory, available to all students, in the La Brea/Hancock Park area. Hadassah Spalter is the seminary’s director; Chani Pinson is the educational director.
Many prominent lecturers will teach subjects that include Judaic Studies, such as halacha, Talmud, Tanach, hashkafa and chassidus. Credits can be earned in courses like psychology, education, history, graphic design and art. Special evening workshops are being planned in such topics as public speaking, leadership, party planning and money management.
Ohel Sara will also tender all women in the L.A. community a one-hour chavrusah learning program on Tuesday evenings with seminary students.
The faculty includes a mix of rabbis and teachers from the L.A. community. Among the rabbis are: Simcha Bart, Joshua Gordon, Moshe Kesselman, Gershon Schusterman, Y. Schusterman, D. Wagner, Reuven Wolf and Avrohom Union. Other faculty members are Simi Feigen, Simone Greenberg, Devorah Kreiman, Chani Pinson, Rebbetzin Bat Sheva Schochet, Chana Rochel Schusterman, S. Schusterman and Devorah Zheutlin.
