How does one prepare to meet their Maker?
They gird their loins i.e. put on a gartel.
A gartel is a belt or girdle that encircles the waist at elbow level and is traditionally worn by men.
Once I was in a waiting room and a chassidishe mom was crocheting a gartel for her son who was about to turn bar mitzvah. I follow Chabad traditions and usually a gartel of that caliber is worn by married men. It turns out that bar mitzvahed boys in Chabad also wear a gartel, but it’s thinner and hidden under the shirt. It is the difference between a single man and a married man.
While a gartel worn on the outside may help the single ladies figure out who’s available for marriage, it has more practical daily use. In these modern days of wearing garments with waistbands, we may no longer have to worry about actively separating our heart from our lower parts as in the days of robes, but the gartel still serves as an additional layer and level of preparation to greet G-d and properly concentrate in prayer.
