Winery representative, Eyal Franco explained, “We are very excited about this new technology and its ability to create a more environmentally friendly version of winemaking. Just as we carefully tend our vines to ensure the sustainability of the land, now we able to further reduce our impact on natural resources.” By cutting out so many of the components that go into standard wine production, (manufacturing bottles, the bottling plants, corking the bottles, shipping bottles, the boxes and cartons used to ship bottles, etc) wine on tap is more than just the latest fad. It creates a viable vision for the long term future of winemaking.
Among the most successful wineries in Israel , the Galil Mountain Winery has long had a commitment to providing high quality wine at an affordable price. The same excellent wine that has long provided in bottles, is now flowing freely from taps. To ensure the best possible taste for consumers, a special blend of Cabernet and Merlot grapes has been created especially for this project. With pride Franco says, “So far, our tasters have wowed by the flavor.”
If the flavor doesn’t blow you away, the price will. A single glass of red wine on tap is being sold for between 15-19 shekels! That’s about half price from a single glass from the bottle. With prices being so reasonable, it is easy to understand how the Washington Post recently declared the wine had overtaken beer as “the new drink of the everyman.”
As wine on tap helps nurture wider interest in wine drinking, it is important that wineries stay in touch with their consumers. The Galil Mountain Winery has its ear to the ground when it comes to customer feedback. In a very unusual move, this year will see the relaunching of their Avivim wine. While some wineries would stick doggedly to their carefully developed blends, when some consumers felt that the previous version had ‘too much oak,’ the winemakers responded to their market and changed the blend. The new Avivim wine will be made up of 86% Chardonnay and 14% Viognier grapes, giving it a fresher, lighter flavor.
With wineries ready adapt to their needs, massive savings without any compromise on quality in the product, and a more environmentally sound method of production, there’s little wonder that around the world wine appreciation is becoming everyone’s favorite hobby.
