Once you have figured out where you want to go and have negotiated childcare, it is time to prepare the kids. Sit them down and tell them that this super-fun person is coming to stay and play with them while mommy and daddy go away for just a little bit. Allow them a few extra treats while the babysitter is there, but be careful not to destroy your carefully prepared structure and create a free-for-all. If the babysitter can swing it, she can take them out to eat for dinner as a prize for behaving. Prepare presents to give to the children right before you leave so that they will be focused on the toys instead of the absence of your presence.
The house also has to be prepared. Unless you have regular cleaning help, spend some extra time doing a good cleaning before leaving, changing the linen and making sure there are extra towels and changes of clothing. Write a menu and indicate where all the food, already cooked, will be. Create a chart detailing the children’s morning, afternoon and bedtime routines. Post a list with any allergies, the doctor’s and pharmacy’s numbers and addresses, and additional emergency numbers if you can’t be reached.
Whatever you decide to do, as soon as you and/or the kids leave, watch your spirits soar. You will be absolutely amazed at the amount of energy you have once you have been released from the rewarding, albeit draining, task of taking care of your children’s every need.
Then, upon your return, you will once again be amazed at the feeling of rejuvenation in both your marriage and parenting career. Remember to take lots of pictures so that you can recapture those feelings whenever life gets overwhelming.
