Mark Mone Chancellor University of Milwaukee Office of the Chancellor Chapman Hall 202 2310 E Hartford Avenue P.O. Box 413 Milwaukee, WI 53201 Fax: (414) 229-2347

Dear Chancellor Mone,

I’m sure you must get this a lot, but I have to ask if you are related to the Count Di Monet (pronounced Monee) featured in Mel Brooks movie History of the World Part 1?

Chancellor Mone, you defended the right of one of your students to carry a sign stating that Jews should go to the gas on the basis that while you loathed the message, his expression was protected by the First Amendment.

I would like to ask you this question. If a student paraded around carrying a sign stating, 'N*****s back to slavery,' would you rip the sign from his hands and expel him or would you say, while I hate this racist sentiment, I’m obligated to defend his freedom of speech.

I would be very grateful if you would consider this question and respond as honestly as you can.

Sincerely yours,

Larry Shapiro
