On Monday, the weekly Canadian Jewish News (CJN) told subscribers in an online note that it would cease publishing a weekly newspaper in Toronto and Montreal, The Globe and Mail reported.

CJN president Donald Carr said he hopes to re-launch a digital-only publication – but at this point the website operates at a 1994 Internet pace.

Over the years, the paper grew more resistant to covering controversial stories, according to Lewis Levendel, who worked at the paper until 1978. “I’m sure it dissatisfied a lot of the people who felt there should be more investigation, more reporting on the local scene,” Levendel told the Globe and mail.

The report noted that on Monday, when the CJN told subscribers in an online note it would cease publishing in Toronto and Montreal, many readers admitted they hadn’t read it in years.
