Israel Destroys 100,000 Turkeys with Bird Flu

By Jewish Press News Desk

On Saturday morning it was discovered that turkeys in Moshav Aviel near Hadera had contracted avian influenza, a.k.a. "bird flu".

This is an isolated coop which houses 100,000 birds.

The Ministry of Agriculture ordered the destruction and burial of all the turkeys so the virus doesn't spread to neighboring farms. This is standard procedure in case of an outbreak.

The Ministry will also be conducting tests on bird coops within a 3 kilometer range of this infected coop to make sure the virus didn't spread.

The last outbreak in Israel was in March 2012. The first was in 2006.

No humans in Israel have been infected with the virus so far.
