A Free or Democratic State - Which Do You Prefer?

When labeling countries, the words “free” and “democratic” often go hand in hand. However, freedom may include democracy but democracy does not necessarily include freedom.

Hamas, the PLO, leaders of Syria, Egypt and many others, consider themselves “democratic” simply because they run elections, but their people are not free in accordance with international law.

Israel is a free and democratic Jewish state, and should be referred to as such. While it is important to recognize Israel’s democratic political system, it is essential to recognize that first and foremost, it is free. It is important to incorporate the word “free” in any naming of the state of Israel.
