In 1994, Yitzchak Rabin signed a peace treaty with Jordan, which failed to live up to its name. As part of the treaty, Israel leased the areas of Naharayim and a section of Tzofar (Al-Ghamr) for 25 years, with the possibility of renewal - except that Jordan decided to not renew the lease. The Israeli farmers who worked the land left for the last time, and the IDF locked the gates to the Isle of Peace at Naharayim.
