Ex-Turkish Army Chief Gets Life in Prison for Coup Attempt
On Monday, Turkey's former military chief was sentenced to life in prison and More than 60 people received sentences ranging from 1 to 47 years, for plotting to topple the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
At the end of a five-year trial, with close to 250 defendants facing treason charges, Istanbul's 13th High Criminal Court handed life terms to retired Gen. Ilker Basbug, along with retired military officers, a left-wing politician and a journalist, the AP reports.
21 people were acquitted. The full tally of sentences is not yet available.
The defendants are expected to appeal the verdicts.
