The Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue, in Jerusalem's Old City, will be rebuilt by the Israeli government at a cost of NIS 50 million, according to a report in Yisrael Hayom. The government is expected to officially make the announcement on Jerusalem Day, which is this coming Wednesday.

The synagogue was built in 1872, and was purposely targeted and destroyed by the Jordanians in 1948 during the War of Independence, when the Arab states tied to destroy the fledgling Jewish state.

From 1948 until 1967, under Jordanian control, there were no Jews in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Jews have made up the majority of Jerusalem's residents since the 1800's.

In 2010, the Hurva Synagogue which was also targeted and destroyed by the Jordanians, was rebuilt.
