Mamdani’s Toxic Anti-Establishment Ideology

When a 41-year-old career criminal with nearly 30 prior arrests was found dead in his cell at Rikers Island last week, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani immediately took to social media to express his profound grief. “I am deeply saddened by the death of a New Yorker in City custody,” the mayor said, offering his thoughts and prayers to the inmate’s family.

What the mayor conspicuously failed to mention was why the inmate was in a jail cell in the first place. In fact, he was awaiting trial for the gruesome, unprovoked murder of Jose Miranda, a hardworking father of two who was brutally hacked to death with a meat cleaver inside a Bronx laundromat.

The mayor’s glowing sympathy for a violent sociopath – and his chilling silence regarding the innocent victim – is not just a political gaffe. It is a defining feature of an ideological worldview that consistently elevates the welfare of criminals above the safety of law-abiding citizens.

For the grieving family of Jose Miranda, watching the mayor of New York publicly mourn their loved one’s accused butcher was a profound betrayal. Miranda’s mother rightly called the statement a “slap in the face.”

When the chief executive of the city uses his platform to eulogize a violent offender without uttering a single word of regret for the innocent life that was stolen, he sends a blaring message to every victim of violent crime in the five boroughs that their pain does not matter to his administration.

Mamdani’s statement was a calculated political signal to his radical base. He seized upon the inmate’s death merely as an opportunity to reiterate his ideological crusade against law enforcement, including his obsession with closing Rikers Island. 

Indeed, the mayor’s response exposes the deeply inverted moral compass that drives his anti-law enforcement agenda. In his distorted worldview, criminals are the true victims, and serial offenders are viewed as tragic casualties of a broken system, regardless of the blood on their hands. Jails are the enemy because facilities designed to keep the public safe from predators are institutional evils that must be dismantled. And the innocent people hacked to death in laundromats, pushed onto subway tracks, or assaulted on the street are treated as inconvenient footnotes to the grand narrative of criminal justice reform.

This is the credo of the far left, and it has profound, dangerous consequences for the safety of New York City. A mayor who instinctively mourns a meat-cleaver-wielding killer cannot be trusted to effectively manage the NYPD or protect the public. It is becoming more and more evident by the day that we need someone in the Governor’s mansion in Albany to rein Mamdani in. And as of now, the choice between Mamdani ally Kathy Hochul and his fierce critic Bruce Blakeman is a no-brainer.
