Mubarak Appears in Court, Lawyer Argues Against Death Penalty

Deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was wheeled into court on a stretcher Tuesday morning for what Egypt is calling the “trial of the century," as his defense lawyer challenged the prosecution's call to impose the death penalty on the former dictator.

"There is no evidence to prove that Mubarak gave orders to open fire on the protesters," lawyer Farid al-Deeb said.

Mubarak and his two sons are accused of ordering security forces to kill protesters during the 18-day revolt that overthrew his reign, and of exploiting their power to illegally amass a fortune.
