Indeed, Genesis 2:24 states: “Al kein ya’azov ish et aviv v’et imo ve’davk b’ishto ve’hayu le’basar echad – Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This is not to say that adult children are not obligated to honor their parents. Rather, when children get married, it is their turn to establish their own household, and their parents should strive not to inhibit the young couple’s newfound responsibilities and Torah-given rights as parents.
