Word Prompt – DEGEL – Simcha Eichenstein

First, let’s establish the obvious: a degel is a flag. It can represent a nation, a state, a movement, a community, or even a sports team. It is a symbol of what we stand for. When we wave our flags, we show the world that we are proud of what it represents. For many, it is an expression of their personal identity.

But your degel doesn’t have to be a physical flag. It can be anything that conveys who you are – and often, it’s something subtle. Everything you do and say, the values you uphold, and even the clothes you wear can be your degel.

As a member of the New York State Assembly, representing my district and my community, I often feel that I am waving an invisible degel. The manner in which I present myself, the things I say, the culture and traditions I honor, even the clothing I choose – these are all my degel.

I encourage each of us to raise our degel with pride. Show the world that you are proud of your heritage, your community, your beliefs, and your history. You don’t need to wave a piece of cloth to make a statement. Your degel is who you are and what you stand for. Wear it however you choose – but wear it with pride.
