Haredi MK Rabbi: Yeshiva Students Goof Off Just Like Gov’t Workers

Haredi Knesset Member Rabbi Meir Porush has found less than complimentary common ground between yeshiva students on the one hand and government workers and academic students on the other – “goofing off.”

MK Porush, adamantly against drafting yeshiva students into the army, recently said they would prefer to sit in jail rather than leave their Talmudic studies.

It now turns out that there are yeshiva students who “goof off” – but that is okay, he said in an interview with the Israeli Maariv newspaper.

“There is goofing off like in any place,” he explained – “just like at universities and government offices.”

Porush, who has railed against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s “immoral position” of chipping away at the military exemptions for yeshiva students, is sure “there certainly aren’t more yeshiva students goofing off than there are government workers doing the same.

“I am prepared to visit every academic institution and government office with you and compare the number of people goofing off,” said the Knesset Member.

He missed the opportunity to show that yeshiva students goof off a lot less than another group of people, such as Knesset Members.
