The Middle East is home to more than 35 million Kurds, whose nationalist aspirations have been thwarted for over 100 years. Now, an acclaimed battlefront reporter and analyst, British -Israeli, Jonathan Spyer has received notice from the US State Department that he is under a lifetime ban for entry to the US because of his support for the Kurds. His predicament denying his ability to travel to the US for policy forums, consultations and visits to family is truly Kafkaesque. Why is the US government carrying out the demands of Turkey’s Erdogan, a sworn enemy of Kurds against Spyer?

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon of Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix reached out to Jonathan Spyer to answer this question and his assessment of Turkey’s threats to normalization of relations between the Arab middle east and Israel.

Jonathan Spyer is a research fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies (JISS), a fellow at the Middle East Forum and a freelance security analyst and correspondent at IHS Janes.

Spyer is the Executive Director of the Middle East Center for Reporting and Analysis (MECRA). He is the author of Days of the Fall: A Reporter's Journey in the Syria and Iraq Wars (Routledge, 2017) - an account of his field reporting in Syria and Iraq, and The Transforming Fire: the Rise of the Israel-Islamist Conflict, (Continuum, 2010).

Spyer's work is published in many journals, including the Jerusalem Post, Times of Israel, Foreign Policy and the Wall Street Journal. He consults and advises for a wide variety of bodies in the governmental, NGO and private sectors.

The following are some takeaways from this Israel News Talk Radio- Beyond the Matrix with Jonathan Spyer.

On why Erdogan’s Turkey might have been behind the ban issued by the US.

Spyer cites as leading possible reason that the US State Department may have been influenced by Erdogan to ban his entry as a foreign nation. Spyer’s believes that Erdogan’s animus against him is due to his coverage of Kurdish nationalist interests and aspirations, especially in Syria and the Turkish dictator’s handling of domestic and foreign journalists. Spyer has nothing against the Turkish people having traveled and enjoyed his time there. It is Erdogan who has stolen the liberties of his people. He earnestly believes that the US travel ban will be rectified shortly with the assistance of informal appeals of “friends”.

On why Erdogan’s Turkey is a danger to the Region.

Spyer considers Erdogan’s Turkey as a major disruption in the Middle East fostering destabilization in the region undermining countries. He considers Erdogan’s threat second only to Iran. This is reflected in Turkish invasion of Western Iraq, the ethnic cleansing of the enclave of Kurdish enclave of Afrin in Western Syria and invasion of northeaster Syria Kurdish heartland establishing a so-called safe Zone. Erdogan is organizing Sunnis in Northwest Lebanon, he has threatened the triple alliance of Israel, Greece, and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean offshore energy development thwarting building of a pipeline to Europe by arbitrarily declaring an Exclusive Economic Zone from Libya to Turkey. His alliance with Hamas and Gaza and activities in Jerusalem are a threat to Israel. Through the Turkish paramilitary contracting firm of SADAT International Defense Consultancy, Erdogan is spreading his version of Political Islam by recruiting Islamist mercenaries. SADAT is headed by his former military advisor retired Brig. Gen. Turkish General Adnan Tanriverdi. SADAT is akin to ‘green men’ of Russia’s Wagner Group and Iran’s Shiite mercenaries in Syria and Iraq. However, Speyer considers Erdogan at risk of marginalizing Turkey given that his actions have exacerbated relations with Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, and the Gulf Emirates, especially the UAE, through his espousal of the Muslim Brotherhood doctrine.

How Qatar supports Turkey’s Political Islam Muslim Brotherhood Agenda.

Spyer considers Qatar as the main financier of Erdogan’s Muslim Brotherhood agenda. The wealthy Gulf emirate is bailing out Turkey’s waning economy. Qatari money backs Turkey’s activities in the region with funding of Hamas in Gaza and the PA areas. Erdogan activities in Libya in support of the Islamist Siraj GAN government nearly triggered a war with Egypt over threats Libya’s oil producing region.

On the value of the Kurds, Israel and US actions in Syria isolating Assad.

Spyer believes the US strategy of pressure through sanctions is isolating Assad. He notes that the minimal US presence at strategic points in Syria has preserved 30 percent of the country’s oil and agricultural producing region in the country’s northeast held by Syrian Kurds. This thwarts Assad’s Iran’s and Russia’s objectives in Syria. He considers the Trump Administration “maximum pressure” campaign including sanctions an effective” low budget high yield strategy” that “weakens and chastens” Assad. He thinks the Israeli air campaign in Syria- the covert campaign between the wars has disrupted the Iranian project endeavoring to supply weapons to Hezbollah via Syria. It has forced the development of Hezbollah’s missile production recently revealed by Israel deepening Iran’s control in Lebanon.

On French President Macron’s mistaken Lebanon strategy.

Spyer considers French President strategy in Lebanon unrealistic trying to use leverage to separate Hezbollah, a major player from control of Lebanon’s government. Hezbollah is an extension of Iran’s project in Lebanon feeding off the Hezbollah Michel Aoun alliance. In the current crisis, Lebanon’s people suffer. Macron’s so-called “charm offensive” has no chances of success. Instead Spyer thinks France should follow the example of Germany’s Chancellor Merkel which has declared Hezbollah a terrorist organization rather remaining a holdout.

Iran’s Iraq project divides the Kurdish Region and seeks to oust the US presence.

After the demarche in 2017 following the failure of the KDP Barzani Independence referendum and seizure of the oil rich Kirkuk governorate by Iran-controlled Shia Iraqi militia, the Kurds are divided. The Kurdish Regional Government region is divided by the Barzani clan controlling the capital region of Irbil, the PUK Talabani clan controlling Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the east bordering Iran with the PKK based in Qandil. Spyer believes the US strategy, as recently suggested in remarks by US Secretary of State Pompeo, should consider moving our Embassy from the ‘green zone’ in Baghdad to Irbil in the Kurdish Regional Government and withdrawing main US forces from bases in Iraq, instead using Special Forces based in the Kurdish Regional Government area. Iran, he thinks is turning up its control in Iraq. This was reflected in the use of Iran-controlled Shia militia putting down protests by Iraqi Shia youths over government corruption.

Can Sudan normalize with the US and Israel? – a discussion with Gilad Liberman After the White House signing of separate normalization treaties on September 15th between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which Arab nation might be next. Prior to the ceremony on the White House back lawn, Secretary of State Pompeo made a flight to Khartoum from Jerusalem offering a similar deal, which led to a premature announcement of normalization with Israel by the spokesman of the Sudan Foreign Ministry and his immediate firing by the Foreign Minister. Subsequently, the US effort to normalize relations between Sudan and Israel appeared to have collapsed after meetings in Abu Dhabi last week. Both the Chairman of Transitional Military Council (TMC) General al Burhan, a former Bashir regime military leader, and Transitional Sovereignty Council PM Abdallah Hamdok the target of a recent assassination attempt by Bashir allies, rejected financial aid offers offered by the UAE and Israel of $800 million with a contribution of $10 million from Israel. They were seeking upwards of $4 billion in financial aid. The US suggested that a payment of $335 million might release Sudan from the $7.3 billion US court award in 2017 to US victims of Al Qaeda bombings of Embassies in both Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. US Senators and Members of Congress are calling for additional compensation for 9/11 victims. Sudan is desperate to be lifted from the 1993 US State Department listing as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. At the time Israel was concerned about Sudan’s filtering of weapons to terrorist group Hamas in Gaza. Israel’s air force in 2012 had made massive raids on Sudan underground missile factories made with Iranian cooperation. The issue the US and Israel must ponder is Sudan capable of transformation to a democratic civilian government when its military leaders were part of a Bashir cabal that perpetrated ethnic cleansing and genocidal crimes against indigenous peoples in Darfur, the Nuba Mountains and the Blue Nile region. Leaders of the notorious Rapid Support Janjaweed Militia, TMC Chairman Deputy Generals al Burham and Deputy Chair Gen Degallo (Hemeti) led Bashir’s forced Arabization in Darfur that continues long past the incarceration of long term Sudan President Bashir in April 2019. The toll in Darfur alone is over 600,000 killed, 5 million dispersed to insecure UNAMID internal displaced persons camps with several hundred thousand dispersed to UN Refugee Camps in neighboring Chad. Will Bashir be transferred to the International Criminal Court at the Hague to be prosecuted under the outstanding 2009 and 2010 indictments? Will former Bashir allies Generals al Burham and Degallo of the TMC deny the formation of a civilian government by 2022 by seizing power in a coup? Is Sudan capable of normalizing in such a fractured dangerously divisive state? For answers to these and other questions Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon reached out to Israeli Dr. Galid Liberman. Liberman has long been involved in matters concerning Eritrean and Sudan refugees in Israel and blogs on such matters for the Times of Israel. He holds a Phd in neurosciences from Bar Ilan University and is presently a research fellow in imagery at the Harvard Medical School.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dr. Stephen Bryen to discuss Israel’s emergence as the Middle East’s superpower enabling normalization with the Arab emirates and possibly Saudi Arabia. This comes as Israel signed the first Abraham Accords with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the White House brokered by the Trump Administration, changing the geo-political makeup of the region threatening Iran and sidelining the Palestinians. Now there are prospects that this agreement may be followed by others in the Gulf region, given announcements by Bahrain and Oman. The question is when will the Saudis join the process.

Among the takeaways from this Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix with Dr. Bryen are the following.

Israel’s Pre-emptive nuclear power, air force and intelligence makes it the strong horse in the Middle East.

Dr. Bryen suggests that this major regional normalization with Sunni Arabs in the Middle East happened because Israel is the only region nuclear power with an umbrella of pre-emptive weapon systems, both land and sea based. Moreover, it has a world class air force and first-rate intelligence capability. The latter is evident in the seizure of Iran’s nuclear development archives and speculation that it may have been behind the cyber -kinetic attacks this summer that have once again set back Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Dr. Bryen is a former Reagan era Deputy Undersecretary for Technology and Security, a noted military technologist who is a columnist for The Asia Times.

Bryen revealed during the interview that as a Senior US Senate Foreign Relations staffer he wrote a strategic paper on normalization with Egypt in the mid-1970’s that involved discussions with Egyptian Generals who remarked “we did not need another war with Israel”. That resulted in the Begin - Sadat Camp David “cold peace” treaty with Egypt in 1979, followed by a similar one with Jordan in 1994. The 2020 Israel-UAE Accord is based on a “warm peace” with full commercial, trade and diplomatic exchanges.

Israel’s Triad Nuclear Umbrella is Powerful Deterrent.

Like major powers, Israel has a triad of nuclear pre-preemptive capabilities. It has the Jericho ICBM equipped with a nuclear warhead. Its fleet of F-15’s and F-16’s can deliver nuclear and conventional bombs. However, the F-35” I” versions do not fit a nuclear delivery mission profile. The Israeli fleet of German built Dolphin Class Submarines are equipped with conventional and nuclear torpedoes and cruise missiles, as well as swimming capabilities to launch intelligence gathering and naval commando operations. The Dolphin submarines, while diesel electric powered, use the Air Independent Propulsion system that can operate silently at great depths and like the US Trident nuclear missile boat “boomers” are difficult to detect. It is a hydrogen-based power module that allows the submarine to operate for a long term fully submerged. For a diesel electric they gain many of the virtues of a nuclear submarine at a fraction of the cost and are much safer to operate and cheaper to build.

Thus, the triad of land based, air and submarine delivery of nuclear weapons is meant to address Israel’s “asymmetry problem”: the threat of nuclear missiles by an enemy could destroy 80 percent of the small country’s population. Thus, the Israeli Triad is based solely on a first strike pre-emptive capability. Dr. Bryen noted this was the lesson learned from the mistake made by Israel’s then PM Gold Meir and security cabinet prior to the October 1973 Yom Kippur War by not acting pre-emptively for fear of offending Washington. By acting pre-preemptively as it did during the June 1967 Six Days of War, “Israel could have saved lives”.

Iran does not have nuclear capable long-range missiles, but the Abraham Accords includes a deterrent.

Despite Iran’s announcement of enhanced long-range missiles. Bryen’s argues persuasively that from examination of the images and specifications Iran does not appear to have long range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Moreover, the Abraham Accords has a plan to build an artificial island in the Gulf that might be used for a joint missile defense and airfield enabling possible attacks on Iranian bases. Bryen suggests “this puts Iran on notice about the ability to stop development of a credible nuclear weapons capability”.

The Pandora’s Box of tactical nuclear weapons.

Bryen views as problematic the ‘leak’ by President Trump of development of so-called tactical nuclear low yield warheads for the Trident submarine force in response to Russian developments. He argues that “once unleashed it could get out of control and could make nuclear war more likely”.

Assessment of Russia and China First Strike Nuclear Capabilities and US Triad.

The discussion assessed the first strike capabilities and vulnerabilities of China and Russia. Bryen does not believe that China’s 300 land-based ICBMs constitute a credible first strike threat. However, its submarine missile boats could be. Like the US Tridents and Israeli Dolphins, they are difficult to detect. except operating in the shallow Taiwan Straits and South China Sea. Bryen noted China is not a signatory with any arms control agreement with the US. The US nuclear triad consists of land-based ICBMs in silos, air delivery by B1, B2, B-52 and F-16’s and the Trident missile boats with ICBMs. On the vulnerability of US or Russian based ICBMs, in silos Bryen suggests that depends on the accuracy of the attacking missile and the extent of over pressure to destroy the missile. The question is has Russia ‘cheated’ under existing arms control agreements and perfected a credible first strike capability?

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant, and Jerry Gordon of Israel News Talk Radio – “Beyond the Matrix” bring back Dan Diker of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) to discuss two stunning developments that are game changers: Israel normalizing relations with the UAE and potentially other Arab states in the Gulf and the Balkan countries of Kosovo and Serbia. Diker is the director of the Political Warfare Program at the JCPA and former Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress.

UAE Israel normalization sidelines years of Palestinian rejectionism in the Middle East peace process.

Diker noted that the announcement of normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel brokered by the Trump Administration upends the Palestinian propaganda machine that has “defamed, dehumanized and delegitimized the Jewish nation state with virulent anti-Semitism.” Diker suggested that today regional peace is now possible with the Arab gulf states with the likelihood that additional normalization agreements may soon become reality with Middle Eastern states such as Bahrain, Oman, Morocco and perhaps Saudi Arabia. Diker noted the granting of air rights by Saudi Arabia through the UAE for travel stopovers to the East, and for the recent transit of U.S. and Israeli delegations to Abu Dhabi. Moreover, recent statements by the Imam of the Grand Mosque appear to welcome these normalization developments.

Diker credits Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who had invested years of effort in reaching out to Muslim majority nations in the Middle East and the African continent. The Trump Administration Peace To Prosperity economic workshop that took place in Manama, Bahrain in May 2019, through the visionary efforts of presidential advisor Jared Kushner, Special Envoy Jason Greenblatt, and U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman laid the groundwork for the UAE-Israel “Abraham Accord.” Diker emphasized the overarching Arab understanding that Israel has become the solution for the security and stability of the Middle East opposite the regional threat of the nuclearizing and subversive Iranian regime that is threatening the entire region. The emerging alliances between Israel and its Arab neighbors have largely been kept secret for the past 20 years.

It is little known that the Israel UAE security relationship was launched following the 9/11 attacks when it became known that the terrorists used Dubai as an operational transit point. In 2011 alone, the UAE ordered more than $300 million of Israeli high tech. According to a Reuters report, an Israeli government minister estimated that annual trade between Israel and the UAE may reach $4 billion in defense, energy, medicine, tourism, and technology. Diker notes Emirati investment in Israeli development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Diker pointed to Palestinian Authority (PA) delegitimization of the UAE which the PA called “the new Arab Zionist,” with chief PA propagandist Saeb Erekat stating that “Israel has occupied the UAE.” Diker dismissed PA propaganda likening it to “withering leaves on the vine.” Moreover, he contends that a PA resolution opposing the UAE-Israel Abraham Accord will likely amount to nothing based on the “thundering silence” of the Arab street and capitals following the signing of the Abraham Accords.

Referring to a pioneering JCPA 2018 report, Defeating Denormalization, Diker believes that the UAE normalization sets up new strategies for middle class Palestinians in the West Bank and even in Gaza, given the failures of both the PA and Hamas.

Diker commented on the controversial proposed sale of F-35 fighter jets by Washington to the UAE, saying that the United States and Israel have a longstanding agreement to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge (QME). UAE’s response was much more tactical than strategic, insisting that Israel should stop the chatter regarding the sale of the F-35s.

The Kosovo, Serbia, and Israel Diplomatic Breakthroughs.

Another stunning development was announced at the White House last week by Richard Grenell, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and former interim Director of National Intelligence. It was the start of economic normalization between two Balkan states, Muslim majority Kosovo and Christian Serbia. The countries were bitter enemies during the Balkan war of ethnic cleansing that ended with the Dayton Accord, negotiated by the late U.S. Diplomat Ambassador Richard Holbrook. Another important development in this story is that both Kosovo and Serbia have been able to establish embassies in Jerusalem due to the mediation of the Trump Administration.

Diker pointed out the dramatic significance of the Kosovo-Israel relationship that should be traced back to 2009 when the PA modeled its own unilateral push for statehood in violation of the Oslo accords on the Kosovo model of unilateral declaration of statehood, that was triggered in February 2008 when it seceded from Serbia. This explains why Israel had heretofore not recognized Kosovo. Ironically, Israel took less pains to distance itself from Christian Serbia, though Serbia had voted with the Palestinian unilateral bid for statehood in the UN in 2012. The Trump Administration deserves credit for brokering these important diplomatic agreements between these former Balkans enemies that has resulted in Kosovo and Serbia’s exchange of diplomatic relations and announcing embassies in Israel’s capital of Jerusalem.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon of Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix bring back Kenneth L. Hanson, author of “Whose Holy Land? Archaeology Meets Geopolitics in Today’s Middle East. They discuss recent archaeological finds amidst the historic Israel-UAE Abraham Accord normalizing relations in hopefully, a warm peace. Which might lead to similar agreements with other Gulf Arab States and Kingdoms. However, the question is was it worth the price of “suspending” sovereignty over hundreds of ancient archaeological sites confirming millennia of Jewish presence in the Holy Land? Dr. Hanson is an Associate Professor in the Judaic Studies Department of the university of Central Florida in Orlando.

Here are takeaways from the Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix interview with Dr. Hanson.

On the Historic Abraham Accord between Israel and the UAE.

Rod Bryant noted how archaeology “dovetails” the geopolitics of the historic Abraham Accord between Israel and the UAE. Dr. Hanson said the flight from Tel Avi to Abu Dhabi to seal the Accord represented the first “warm peace” in 25 years since the 1994 “cold peace” with the Kingdom of Jordan and the similar cold 1979 Camp David agreement with Egypt. It might lead to similar agreements with other Gulf States like Bahrain, Oman, possibly Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. Hanson said, it recognizes the overarching “civilizational threat” of a nuclear Iran intent on developing an ICBM capable of reaching the “great Satan”, the US. It already has weapons capable of reaching Israel and even targets in Europe. Hanson noted that President Trump “tore up the pathetic agreement” that fostered Iran’s global terrorism threat. He contends that the Gulf Arab Emirates considered “Israel, a solid partner to counter the Iran Threat”. They also recognize Israel as a “high tech dynamo” with its six desalination plants on the Mediterranean capable of producing fresh water and drip irrigation fostering agricultural production. Gordon noted the UAE Sovereign Wealth Fund might be a contender for replacing China in investing in Israeli tech “startups”.

Recent Archaeological Finds in Israel.

Dr. Hanson recounted his earliest student days in a small school on Mt. Zion during the era of “socialist” Israel “rummaging through archaeological sites”. He found it ‘intoxicating” to be standing on top of millennia of Jewish history”. Since the publication of his latest book several major archaeological discoveries and finds have been announced. He cited the discovery of what could be a palace during the Davidic period stemming from digs since 2005 in the Arab Quarter of Silwan below a parking lot. That and other discoveries have “outraged” Palestinians, who have claimed they were the original settlers of the area. This despite continual Jewish presence and the return to the ancestral lands of Jews from Russia and Arab Lands in the Middle east beginning in the 19th Century. Discoveries announced in August 2020 included archaeological evidence of the “burn marks” from destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E. There was also evidence of Jews from both the Exile and Return 70 years later. Hanson likes to cite American Humorist, Mark Twain’s observation from his book, “Innocents Abroad” about his trip to the Holy Land: “History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes”.

He noted the recent find announcement by the Israel Antiquities’ Institute of a 3,200-year-old fortress uncovered in Kibbutz Gal On, 70 kilometers south of Jerusalem. Hanson said it was built by Egypt “in cahoots” with the Canaanites under an alliance. It reflected the “tentacles” of Ancient Egypt in the region. The fortress, he characterized as a “blueprint in stone with four towers” had hundreds of potsherds that are the “equivalent of dinosaur bones” in Biblical archaeology enabling dating. The fortress was likely contending with the arrival of the Philistine “sea people” from across the Mediterranean and the “new kids of Israelis” from the biblical Book of the Judges. The find verifies the geopolitical succession of extinct Canaanites, Philistines and other groups mentioned in the Bible. Bryant said that “only the Jews survived” to return and rebuild their ancient land. Hanson spoke of the millennial persecution of Jews, which leave upwards of 16 million today, instead of an estimated 200 million. He noted the anti-Semitic Romans, whose Emperor Hadrian wanted to “obliterate” the truculent Jews ending the Bar Kochba Revolt in 135 C.E., resurrecting the centuries extinguished Philistines, renaming the Jewish lands, Syria Palestina.

The other recent find was the uncovering of 2,700-year-old major administrative center not far from the new US Embassy in Jerusalem in a dig led by Israel archeologist Eilat Mazar. Hanson noted the massive structure indicative of an ancient Israelite kingdom perhaps during the reign of King Hezekiah.

Was Israeli Sovereignty the price of the Abraham Accord?

The discussion turned to the question of what price did Israel pay to achieve a “warm piece” with the UAE under the Abraham Accord. Was it to preserve land for a future Palestinian State under the Trump Peace Plan? Hanson cited US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman suggesting that sovereignty was simply “in suspension”. He makes the distinction between “annexation” – taking of conquered lands, versus “sovereignty - the extension of Israel Basic Law to land it already possessed replacing the current Israeli Military Administration. New Right Yamina Party leader Ayelet Shaked suggested that “sovereignty” has become an “illusion”. She contends that occurred when Netanyahu was “trapped” in the National Emergency Government coalition with Gantz of the Blue White Alliance. Hanson noted that following the June 1967 six Days War Israel regained its ancient Jewish provenance, including the Machpelah Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Hanson said, that raised the prospect of “why can’t we live” in Judea and Samaria? The Arabs in the disputed territories were not expelled as were 600,000 Mizrahi Jews from Arab lands in the Middle East and Jews from the disputed territories in the 1948 War for Independence. Hanson suggest that extension of sovereignty to the disputed territories of Samaria and Judea would offer an option of Israeli citizenship for oppressed Palestinians, a possible solution to the Arab Israeli impasse.

The Jewish archaeological Sites in Jordan.

Rod Bryant asked about the dozens of ancient Jewish Levitical sites in what is now the Kingdom of Jordan. Hanson referred to the Israeli nursery rhyme: “two banks has the river Jordan, one is ours and the other, also”. Hanson contends that was established in the 1917 Jewish Home Balfour Declaration and 1920 San Remo Palestine Mandate. However, geopolitical expediency by then British Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill in 1923 changed all that. The right bank became Transjordan – the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. In the 1948 War for Independence Jordan illegally annexed the West Bank that was retaken by Israel in the June 1967 War.

With the announcement of the normalization of relations between Israel and the UAE, and trips by Secretary of State Pompeo and Jared Kushner to Israel, Bahrain , Oman and Sudan, a warm Peace between Israel and Arab Emirates in the Gulf has ended the leverage of “Peace through a Palestine State ”.

One of those who welcomed that change is Sarah Stern, founder, and President of EMET –the Endowment for Middle East Truth. She had just published a JNS.org article, “The Center of Gravity has shifted under the Palestinians Feet”. She wrote: “ It has taken 72 years and the Iranian threat, but the icy-cold chill of the presence of a modern Jewish state in the Middle East has gradually begun to thaw; first, with Egypt in 1979, then with Jordan in 1994, and now today with the UAE”.

The group under Stern’s leadership has been a ‘force-multiplier’ for peace with Israel and justice for the victims of terrorism.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon interviewed Sarah Stern of EMET about the prospects of expanding Israeli normalization of relations with other Gulf Emirates and Arab Middle East Muslim nations and why the hold-back on extending sovereignty to Jewish parts of Area C in Judea and Samaria is only “temporary” given comments by the UAE Ambassador in Washington at an Atlantic Council meeting on this historic Abraham Accord.

Stern’s Extensive Background and Noteworthy Accomplishments.

Before establishing EMET in 2005, Stern was Executive Director for Governmental and Legislative Affairs of the American Jewish Congress, prior to that, she was the National Policy Coordinator of the Zionist Organization of America, and prior to that, she was a National Vice President of WINPAC, a national women’s pro-Israel political action committee. Among her notable achievements were assisting in the passage of the Koby Mandel Act in 2003 by Congress that led to the establishment of the US Department of Justice Office for Justice for Victims of Overseas Justice the 2008 Amendments to Title VI Higher Education Act that mandated universities receiving federal aid for Middle East Studies ensure presentation of a variety of viewpoints and the 2017 passage of the Taylor Force Act directed at curbing US financial assistance to the PA and its “pay for slay” payments to Palestinian terrorists.

EMET has been active in pursuit of justice for American Victims of Palestinian Terrorist. A leading example is Alham Tammimi who scouting locations for a suicide bomber Izz al-Din Shuheil al Masri who denoted a bomb at the Sbarro Pizza in Jerusalem on August 9, 2001 that killed 15, 13 Israelis and Two Americans including 15-year-old Malka Roth. Over 130 were injured in the blast. Tammimi was captured by Israelis and sentenced but released in the October 2011 prisoner exchange for release of Sgt. Gilad Shalit. Tammimi was remanded to the Kingdom of Jordan where she was feted and became a host of a popular Hamas sponsored TV show. EMET has assisted the Roth Family’s effort to have Jordan extradite Tamimi under an extradition treaty that was signed by the government of Jordan in 1995. This is also pursuant to the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1991 which states that anytime an American is murdered or injured overseas , has the right and the responsibility to prosecute and punish that suspect in US courts and have the punishment meted out in US jails. Three other To that end, at EMET’s encouragement, this past April several members of Congress have signed a letter authored by Congressman Greg Steube of Florida, seeking extradition of Ms. Tamimi from Kingdom of Jordan. Jordan’s Ambassador to Washington, Dina Kawar has refused to discuss the impasse.

On why the ground has shifted under the Palestinians.

Sarah Stern said the UAE – Israel normalization agreement is evidence of a “warm” versus cold deal like the 1979 Egyptian and 1994 Jordan agreements. When she had reviewed translations of both the Egyptian and Jordanian Agreements they were “rife” with Antisemitism. She was present on July 25, 2000 when former Israel Justice Minister Eliyakim Rubenstein briefed her and others on the failure at Camp David saying Israel went as far as they dare go, but Arafat ‘simply walked away from the table”. The UAE had never been in a conflict with Israel. Given Palestinian intransigence and rejectionism, after the Gaza 2005 withdrawal Stern contends that the PA became irrelevant in discussions between Israel and Arab States like the UAE.

We brought up the example of Abdel Rahman al-Shantti, the 11 year old Palestinian boy in Gaza, a rapper who talks of peace with Israel only to have Hamas bring in his father for interrogation. Stern finds that encouraging and applauds the behind the direct people to people exchanges between Israelis and Arabs using a variety of social media, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and encrypted services like Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp. She thought that was a ray of light in the darkness and looks forward to the blossoming of other normalization agreements with Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Sudan. The bad actors in the region are Qatar that has spent billions funding Hamas, ISIS and other terrorist threats and Erdogan’s Turkey. Both countries have aligned with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the PA ,threatening Gulf Emirates like the UAE entering normalization agreements with Israel. Qatar has spent tens of millions funding anti-Israel programs at US Universities and K-12 programs in public schools.

Stern drew attention n to the recent introduction of a bi-partisan Senate Bill by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Corey Booker (D-NJ) “Strengthening Reporting of Actions taken Against Normalization with Israel Act of 2020”.

She commended the Trump Administration for its launch of its Vision for Peace through Prosperity Plan. She noted the presence of Foreign Ministers from the UAE, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia at the White House proceedings. She complimented the roles of Jared Kushner, former Special Envoy Jason, Avi Berkowitz, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Special Envoy on Iran Brian Hook.

An intriguing EMET new hire – Hussein Aboubaker Mansour.

Stern is adding to her staff Hussein Aboubaker Hussein, the author of a life changing book, Minority of One: The unchaining of the Arab Mind. Hussein came from a conservative, Islamic, anti-Semitic family background in Egypt and was transformed by learning Hebrew, and ultimately through self-education into a Zionist. He received asylum from former President Obama after suffering torture and imprisonment by Egypt’s security. He has taught Hebrew at Yeshivas at the US Defense Language Institute and serves in the US Army reserves.

Passing of Helen Freedman of AFSI and Esther Levens of Voices United for Israel Stern spoke of her memories of “two Zionist Matriarchs” who passed recently: Helen Freedom, executive director of Americans for a Safe Israel and Esther Levens of Voices United for Israel. Levens, who was an early advocate for Christian outreach, told Stern that she and her late husband had made a Zionist of former Kansas Republican Senator Bob Dole.

Abiding concerns – Jewish education for the next generation.

Stern expressed concern about the lack of effective Jewish education for the next generation. They know little about Jewish history, the Holocaust, identity, and sense of pride. “We need fighters for their future”. Both Bryant and Gordon cited two northwest Florida young women and recent high school graduates, who spent time in Israel, who chose to enter the Garin Tzabar lone soldier program after graduation and elected before going on to college because they said “We want to do our part”.

Diplomatic relations between Israel and UAE may be the beginning of a new era

Israel and the UAE have inked agreements, ushering in - perhaps - a new era of regional cooperation and friendship. Is there a hidden cost to this "dream-come-true"? Where does this leave the forever whimpering, finger-pointing Palestinian Authority?

Rod Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dr. Stephen Bryen to discuss the latest on what triggered Beirut blast, Iran’s Mahan Air terror flights, the important successful recent test of the Arrow -2 system against Iran Nuclear warhead missile threat, Israel laser tech countering Hamas explosive balloon and kite threat to infrastructure in south, and the historic UAE Israel Abraham Accords. Dr. Bryen is a former Reagan Era Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Technology and Security, noted military technologist and widely published Asia Times columnist.

Exploding Rocket Motors in Beirut Port Blast.

Bryen cited the three series of blasts that destroyed the Beirut Port and caused extensive damage and displacement, deaths, and injuries of Lebanese people. The rocket motors may have been underground in the network of tunnels under the port and connected to Beirut airport. This he pointed out were revealed in six seismic signatures. The red plume of the explosion is indicative of rocket fuel oxidizers. The third component was the ammonia nitrate. Bryen noted Russian ad other reports that there may not have been over 2,700 tons, but perhaps less than 600 tons involved. The rest have been used for other purposes including IED terror attacks. Normally the explosive ammonia nitrate has a shelf life of less than six months. Bryen disputes Lebanese Army reports of sewers being uncovered not tunnels. However, he noted that Israel has reported since 2018 Hezbollah tunneling creating missile workshops in the Beirut Port.

Texas City 1947 Explosion and 1995 Oklahoma City Terror Bombing involving Ammonia Nitrate.

Bryant raised the 1947 Texas City, Texas blast of 2,300 tons of Ammonia nitrate that in turn ignited oil storage tanks was triggered by a fire aboard a French ship was being loaded. The blast that killed over 581, injuring more than 8, 400 and could be heard for 100 miles. Bryen cited similar ammonia nitrate blasts in France but also the use in terrorist attacks. The lost notable being the 1995 Oklahoma City Federal Alfred P. Murrah Building truck bombing that killed 168, Injuring hundreds. That largest US terrorist attack before 9/11 used hundreds of pounds of ammonia nitrate in a shaped charge, mixed with racing fuel oil.

Iran’s Mahan Air Terror Flights in Beirut and Syria.

The discussion of Iran’s Mahan Air flights engaged in supply of precision missile components to Hezbollah tunnel workshops via the adjacent Beirut Airport was raised. Bryen noted the recent provocative Mahan Air overflights of the US Al-Tanf base in Syria suspected of engaging in aerial photo reconnaissance in violation of the deconfliction agreement with Russia that maintains a 55-mile radius. He noted the dispatch of two US F-15s from the Jordanian airbase at Al Azraq and the evasive actions of the Mahan Air A-320 airbus.

Significance of Israeli Arrow 2 Block 5 tests against Iranian nuclear missile threat.

Bryen drew attention to the significance of the recent test of the upgraded Israeli Arrow 2 Block 5 missile defense system that began development in 1982. The longer range strategic exo-atmospheric Arrow 3 system was successfully tested in Alaska in 2019. The Arrow 2, which also has exo-atmospheric capabilities provides more tactical layer of defense against Iran’s nuclear warhead equipped missiles under development. The test involved use of the Israel Green Pine that support the Arrow Missile systems and US TPY2 radar systems – the latter used for the US THAAD system deployed in Saudi Arabia. Bryen noted the potential use of the Arrow 2 against the Hezbollah threat to the Israel port of Haifa using the Iranian Zelzal missiles modified with GPS systems. The merger of both Arrows system with these radar systems would enable discriminating decoy versus activated warheads enabling higher and sooner kill levels of incoming nuclear tipped missiles. Bryen said this is a big step in early warning for both Israel, the US, and other allies in the Middle East region.

Americanization of Iron Dome.

Recent announcement indicated that the US Army may have changed its mind on production of the Iron Dome system. Heretofore, the Army had purchased two batteries, but complained that no source code had been provided ad allegedly it did not work against cruise missiles, a threat for which it was not intended. Bryen noted the more than 2000 successive kills by the Iron Dome against Hamas and PIJ rocket and short-range missile launches. Further, Iron Dome distinguishes between incoming threats and those that do not pose a threat as it is an AI-driven system. Both Bryant and Bryen gave as an example the failure of the CIWS (Close in Weapons Systems – also used aboard US Navy vessels) ) to take down incoming Iranian missiles exploding overhead during the strike at Al Asad airbase in Syria that resulted in significant casualties and damage.

Israeli Laser System for combating Hamas explosive balloons and kites.

Gordon raised the use of lasers to contend with the renewed threat to Israeli southern communities from explosive balloons and kites attacking infrastructure- forests, farms, and injuring civilians. Bryen noted that the system was developed by a team at Ben Gurion University who formed a company called OPTI Defense systems. The OPTI Light Blade (“Lahav-Or” system) relies on thermal cameras to target and destroy balloons, kites, and UAVs.

The UAE Israel Abraham Accords.

Bryen considers the normalization of relations between the UAE and Israel as an indication of how far geo-politics in the region have changed since the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat traveled to Jerusalem in 1977 to initiate a peace agreement. This occurred despite the Mossad assassination in January 2010 of a Hamas arms dealer Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai. al-Mabhouh was responsible for killing two Israel soldiers in1989 and at the time of his assassination was trying to purchase Iranian arms for use in Gaza. This dramatic change occurred because of the common agenda of Israel, the US and many of the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia with the rise of the Iran threat became the nexus for regional cooperation.

On Erdogan’s Threat to the Eastern Mediterranean.

In response to a question about the rising threat of Turkey under Erdogan to destabilize the Triple Alliance of Greece, Cyprus and Israel in the important Eastern Mediterranean gas and energy development, Bryen responded that this is a NATO and US problem. The hope to get Erdogan in line, in Bryen’s view “won’t happen”.
