There's STILL no new government in Israel, and it looks like we may be going to a 3rd election inside of one year.
Questions discussed:
1) Why did PM Netanyahu give the Defense Ministry to Naftali Bennett?
2) Can the Blue & White block form a government? What could it look like?
3) Will we go to new elections, and if so, will the election rules of the game change?
Also, what are the interests and what is happening in the region with the USA, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, and the Kurds? How will this affect the rest of the world?
Are all these news stories, signs that the Messiah is coming?
PLUS: Acknowledging the 81st anniversary of 'Kristallnacht' or 'Night of Broken Glass'. Have the Jews in the Diaspora learned anything?

Living life with uncertainty is hard. Going out of our comfort zone is difficult. Yet, it is precisely when we are called to go beyond our sense of self that we can become more and transform not only ourselves, but the entire world. This is the essence of the tests of Abraham and his journey towards becoming the father of he Jewish nation. There is much to learn in our own lives through understanding Abraham's greatness and his journey.

Rod Reuven Dovid and Jerry Gordon interview Gil Hoffman, chief political analyst and columnist for the Jerusalem Post during his fall tour of the US and Canada. They discuss Israel’s national emergency- the two failures by Prime Minister Netanyahu to form a majority ruling coalition in the Knesset following the April 9th and September 17th, 2019 elections. Now, it is former IDF Chief Benjamin Gantz and his Blue White Alliance turn to see if a national unity government might be formed. But time is running out.
Hoffman calls it the ‘garbage time’ as the Jewish nation is awaiting a decision by Attorney General Mandelblit on a possible bribery indictment against Netanyahu which carries with mandatory jail time. . Hoffman noted that Netanyahu’s lawyers have argued against the bribery charge on the alleged grounds of favorable news coverage. If Netanyahu’s American lawyers prevail in their rebuttal arguments, then Netanyahu might be able to form a ruling coalition.
Meanwhile, Israel is in a national emergency as there is no functioning government and no funding of basic programs
Despite this, Hoffman contends there will be no “threepeat” – a third possible election. The deadline is December 11th. Netanyahu still has a loyal following in Likud. When asked about possible successors to Netanyahu, Israel’s longest serving prime minister who recently tuned 70, Hoffman cited Gedeon Sa’ar, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and former Jerusalem Mayor, Nir Barkat.
Avigdor Liberman is still pressing for a unity party with Gantz’s Blu White Alliance, without the religious parties. Further there is the matter of dealing with the Arab Joint List which could join a coalition in exchange for funding programs. There is the technical possibility of a Blue White Alliance minority government. Hoffman thinks there is no difference between the national security platforms of Gantz and Netanyahu, although the Blue White alliance might more prone to compromise on the Trump peace plan.
Hoffman contends that despite the stalemate to form a new Knesset ruling coalition that there is virtual no chance that Israel will change the basic law to raise the threshold for party representation in the Knesset from the current level of 3.25 %. Nor is there any prospect for Israel adopting a written constitution. Political reform, he says is “too complicated”. Pressure, he believes, is building to come up with an effective compromise to form a ruling coalition.
Turning to regional threats, Hoffman said that Israelis are “very concerned” about US withdrawal from Syria and alarmed about the debacle abandoning the Kurdish allies. Notwithstanding, the protests opposing Iran in both Iraq and Lebanon, Hoffman cited the possible threat of missile attacks on Israel by Iran -backed Houthi proxies from Yemen.

In this show, Jono and Ross discuss an article from the Jerusalem Post claiming that one scholar has made "new findings" that "might shatter biblical archeology paradigm." Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon discuss the superbly executed US special operations raid, that, with Kurdish cooperation and critical intel, bagged the elusive founder of ISIS, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in Northwest Idlib province at al-Bashir village near Turkey. A separate attack took out ISIS spokesperson and possible successor, Abu Hassan al- Muhajir in Turkish controlled Jarabalus. The US raid was named after Baghdadi captive and rape victim, captured US humanitarian aid worker killed in Syria, young, Kayla Mueller.
Dr. Stephen Bryen, a Reagan era Pentagon official, noted military technologist and Asia Times columnist revealed some of the technology and key intelligence that identified the al Bashir safe house in Idlib province in northwest Syria, less than a few miles from the Turkish frontier. Bryen commented that the successful raid was important as it “dashed the hopes of inspired adherents of building a new Caliphate”. That is not withstanding the ability of 14,000 ISIS fighters ranging in Iraq, including hundreds released from prisons in Turkish bombings of a “safe zone” in Kurdish-controlled northeastern Syria.
The all-important intelligence for the raid’s meticulous planning and execution came from Iraqi and especially Syrian Kurdish sources. Information obtained from a Turkish-arrested ISIS figure, turned over to Iraqi National Security, led to one of Baghdadi’s wives as well as his courier. That identified the northwest west Syria safe house in al-Barish, Idlib Province. The key intelligence of the interior of the safe house complex and tunnels including Baghdadi’s DNA was acquired from an informant inside the safe house. That was revealed by the Kurdish Commander of the Syrian Democratic Force, Gen. Mazloum Abdi.
Early Saturday morning, October 26, eight US Special Operations Chinook MH-47Gs and Sikorsky UH60’s flying low and fast from al-Asad air base in Iraq descended on the safe house in Idlib. Bryen noted these aircraft are equipped with special devices and are air refuelable and capable of flying longer distances. They deployed upwards of 70 US Rangers and Delta Force fighters, who secured the perimeter and blew a hole in a wall avoiding booby trapped entrances. They engaged in a short fire fight, killing ISIS fighters, sparing some children. They cornered Baghdadi in a dead-end tunnel with the assistance of a hero attack dog. He took his life and that of three children, injuring the attack dog, by triggering a suicide vest. The raiders took two prisoners and a veritable trove of documents that might identify future ‘kill or capture’ targets of remaining senior ISIS cadre. The accompanying attack helicopters fired missiles that destroyed the enclave. Following confirmation of Baghdadi's Identity from biometric and DNA evidence his remains were disposed at sea with appropriate Islamic rites.
Less than a few hours later, ISIS spokesperson and possible successor Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir was killed in air attack on a vehicle traveling near Jarabalus, Syria, an area occupied by Turkish-backed jihadists of the Syrian National Army. Again, Syrian Kurdish intelligence surveilled the movements of Al-Muhajir.
There were no US casualties in the raid that resulted in the death of the elusive, violent founder of the self-named Caliphate.
Baghdadi was released from US custody in 2010 in Iraq along with former Saddam Hussein security officials. Their plans were put into motion to ultimately form what ultimately became the Salafist Islamic State. It ultimately held a swath of Syria and Iraq, the size of Portugal and repressively governed a population the size of Belgium with massive amounts of stolen funds, taxes and revenues from smuggled oil. In the course of which they killed tens of thousands, engaged ethnic cleansing, rape and enslavement of Yazidi women and children. ISIS produce grisly video of beheadings of several American journalists and aid workers and the burning alive of a Jordanian pilot.
The US also sent an armored column on Saturday from Iraqi Kurdistan into eastern Syria to secure oil production sites in Deir es-Zor Province. President Trump suggested he wanted to have groups like Exxon Mobil develop these sites and refurbish pipelines. Control over those oil sites is contested by both Russia and the Assad regime who have massed forces for a possible confrontation.
Questions were raised in the Beyond the Matrix interview with Dr. Bryen about protection of the Kurdish forces from a spiraling Turkish-backed Jihadist campaign versus a Russia – backed Assad regime scramble for division
of Syria. This is compounded by the lack of a Syrian, let along Middle East US strategy and Turkey’s and Iran’s threats to allies Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan and Israel.
Bryen concluded, Russia’s Putin appears to have become the geo-political beneficiary of the turmoil in Syria triggered by the withdrawal of US support for the Syrian Kurds.
Instead of defeating ISIS “100 percent', as President Trump commented in his announcement of withdrawal of forces from Syria, he admitted to a Chicago crowd recently ISIS is only “70 Percent defeated”.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dilliman Abdulkader, a Kurdish policy expert. He is director of external relations at Allegiance Strategies, a Washington, DC -based public affairs consulting firm. He is involved in advocacy for Congressional passage of tough sanctions bi- partisan legislation just as a cease fire “pause” of 120 hours comes to close in northern Syria. The “pause” was concluded with Turkish President Erdogan during a session in Ankara with Vice President Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo. The pause has been interrupted with continued fighting between Turkish -supported jihadist Syrian National Army (SNA) militias and elements of the Kurdish YPG-led Syrian Democratic Force. Moreover, there is increasingly evidence of war crimes perpetrated by the jihadist SNA and use of chemical weapons such as white phosphorous. President Trump ordered the redeployment of 1,000 US forces in Syria to bases in Iraq, while abandoning and even bombing former bases in Syria.
Abdulkader thinks sanctions in proposed bi- partisan legislation co-sponsored by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) are tougher than those lifted by President Trump in the “pause “agreement with Erdogan. A bi-partisan US House resolution condemning the President’s withdrawal from Syria passed resoundingly by a vote of 354 to 60. A House version of the Senate sanctions bill has been scheduled for a vote. Adoption of the Senate version is dependent on a call by Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) who wrote a Washington Post op ed critical of President Trump’s withdrawal from Syria.
Abdulkader said Erdogan’s Turkish Armed Forces unleased a jihadist terror war using former Al Qaeda, Al Nusra and ISIS fighters to ethnically cleanse Kurds from their ancestral homeland in northeastern Syria. He noted Friday preaching in Turkish Mosques of the Quranic Mohammedan Army verses promoting jihad against Kurds, Jews, Christians, Yazidis and other religious minorities. Abdulkader noted that Pakistan and Hamas support Erdogan’s terror war against the Syrian Kurds. The irony is Turkey is a NATO partner committing this jihadist terror war in Syria.
The Turkish-backed jihadists have committed documented war crimes against Kurdish civilians. They have videoed the execution and beheading of prisoners, that in one example included the brutal murder of a 35-year-old woman Kurdish politician. Many children have been maimed by random Turkish artillery bombardments. Abdulkader noted that upwards of 300,000 people have been internally displaced during the fighting in a massive humanitarian crisis. The only realistic option for many fleeing the conflict is Iraqi Kurdistan, which is united in support of Syrian Kurds.
The Turkish attack on October 9th followed a phone call on October 6th with President Trump who acceded to Erdogan’s demands for withdrawal of US special operators. Abdulkader believes that President Trump may have been “duped” during that call. Erdogan already had a security arrangement acceptable to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Force with joint US patrols, and removal of border barriers.
Abdulkader thinks it would be in Israel’s long-term interest to support Kurdish interests in northeastern Syria. He suggests Israel reduce exports to Turkey akin to EU arms embargoes.
He contends that US presence on the ground, while symbolic, is necessary to preserve the gains of Kurds and other religious minorities to stabilize the area. The alternative facing the US is the resurgence of ISIS that cost 11,000 Syrian Kurdish lives to defeat the Caliphate. Meanwhile, Russia has gained ground in the region, as evidenced by meetings with Saudi Arabia and the UAE concerned over US withdrawal from the region. The US appears to have no strategy in Syria, let alone the Middle East.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dilliman Abdulkader, a Kurdish policy expert. He is director of external relations at Allegiance Strategies, a Washington, DC -based public affairs consulting firm. Abdulkader’s family fled from Kirkuk, Iraq during the Gulf War and spent seven years as a child in the Al-Hol refugee camp in northeastern Syria now filled with 70,000 ISIS fighters and families. The Turkish attack on October 9th followed a phone call on October 6th with President Trump who acceded to Erdogan’s demands for withdrawal of US special operators at the border. Abdulkader believes that President Trump was “duped” during that call. Erdogan already had a security arrangement acceptable to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Force with joint US patrols, and removal of border barriers. The model for this jihad terror campaign was the Turkish Operation Olive Branch in early 2018 that overran the Kurdish enclave in Afrin in Northwest Syria with 1.5 million people terrorizing and Islamizing the population. These jihadists, rebranded as the Syrian National Army, were originally members of the Free Syrian Army trained and equipped by the CIA. They were used by Erdogan in Idlib province in Syria. The Turkish-backed jihadists have committed documented war crimes against Kurdish civilians. They have videoed the execution and beheading of prisoners, that in one example included a 35-year-old woman Kurdish politician. Many children have been maimed by random Turkish artillery bombardments. Abdulkader noted that upwards of 200,000 people have been internally displaced during the first week creating a massive humanitarian crisis. The only realistic option for many fleeing the conflict is Iraqi Kurdistan, which is united in support of Syrian Kurds. Abdulkader revealed Turkish Armed Forces, a NATO partner bombarding within 100 meters from a US special operator camp located in Kobani. The Turkish forces also bombed ISIS prison camps guarded by Kurdish forces, freeing detained fighters. Further, there are indications that Iran may be poised to takeover oil resources in eastern Syria. Abdulkader noted that without air support and heavy weapons, the SDF has adopted tactics including use of tunnels to stymie the advance of Turkish and jihadist troops to less than 3 to 5 kilometers. Their original goal for the “safe zone” was 30 kilometers. The main position lost was Manbij, a largely Arab town, which was handed over to Assad forces. It now flies a Russian flag. He noted the last-minute deal with Assad that SDF commander, General Mazloum Kobani said he who would rather have the ‘leverage’ of Syrian Forces on the border. This could signal the end of the tacit agreement with the Russians and Assad about autonomy and defense of the Kurdish homeland. As a result, Assad now controls 65% of Syria. Abdulkader thinks President Trump’s proposed sanctions are not as tough as those in proposed bi- partisan legislation co-sponsored by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Chris Van Holen (D-MD). The President has dispatched Vice President Pence and team to Ankara seeking a possible withdrawal and cease fire. Abdulkader thinks it would be in Israel’s long-term interest to support Kurdish interests in northeastern Syria. He suggests Israel reduce exports to Turkey akin to EU arms embargoes. He contends that the US presence on the ground while symbolic is necessary to preserve the gains of Kurds and other religious minorities to stabilize the area. Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back veteran Iran-watcher, best-selling investigative journalist Ken Timmerman to address the question of has the US lost the Middle East. Background are troubling developments with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Turkey. The bottom line: Iran intends to achieve its goal of controlling the area between the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and the Mediterranean with more than 25% plus of the world’s oil supply while perfecting its Shi’ite objective of surrounding and destroying Israel. As Stephen Bryen has noted in a recent Beyond the Matrix interview the US has “no strategy, no intelligence” and thus appears unable to deal with what Timmerman considers are dire geo-political threats.
Notwithstanding the unresolved recent Israeli do-over election, Timmerman noted that Netanyahu has developed an effective strategic diplomatic and national security policy. He has avoided war with Iran, while punishing it in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq through deconfliction arrangements with Putin. Timmerman hopes that Netanyahu’s legacy will survive in whatever national unity government emerges. He points to a recent interview with Iran’s nefarious Quds Force Commander General Soleimani who noted that in 2006, Iran didn’t intervene in Lebanon against Israel as the US was engaged in War in Iraq. Now Iran and proxies surround Israel on three sides and is seeking to fulfill Shi’ite bizarre doctrine of destroying Israel and bringing back the 12th Imam.
On the Trump Peace Plan Timmerman cites the resignation of Special Envoy Greenblatt saying “there’s no peace partner” – meaning the Palestinians.
We next turned to Saudi failures to defend their oil facilities and display war making capabilities against the Houthi Iran proxy in Yemen, the survival of reformist Crown Prince Mohmmed bin Salman. Timmerman cited the ability of Iran and Iraqi proxies to launch a swarm of drones and cruise missiles that devastated the oil facilities and fields: “ their intel enabled it to the thread the needle of gaps in radar” of billion dollar US anti-Missile defense pointed in the wrong direction”. The Houthi attack that devastated a combined Saudi and Sudan force showed this is really a war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He expects more Houthi cross border razzias against the Saudi seeking to disable the Saudi Royal Regime. Saudi royals are divided over anti-corruption strong arm actions by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salam (MBS) and taking responsibility for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, despite the latter’s Muslim Brotherhood and support of Qatar. MBS is seeking reforms of conservative Wahhabism and diversifying economic reforms such as the ARAMCO IPO. Timmerman warns that Iran could play the Shi’ite card in the Saudi oil rich province through a network of Imams and Mosques. The takeaway is that the Saudis are not strong enough to take on Iran. Irony is that only the US, Israel and the UAE support MBS.
Iraq, Timmerman believes that Iraq is falling apart with internal protests, Iran controlling 100,000 Shi’ite Hashd al Shaabi PMF militia fighters and Israel attacking their warehouses stocked with precision missiles. Iraq is effectively a “province of Iran ceding sovereignty to its neighbor”. The question remains will the US keep its remaining assets in Iraq at the Al-Sad airbase.
Turkey’s Erdogan’s objective in his “safe zone” foray into northeastern Syria Kurdish homeland is to ‘smash Kurds in eastern Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq”. Erdogan, Timmerman contends, was the main patron of ISIS in Syria. Erdogan’s objective in invading northeastern Syria would be to release the 70,000 ISIS families and fighters.
We end this fast-paced informative interview with a discussion of Timmerman’s views on the Whistleblower compliant over Ukraine issues and President Trump’s response.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dan Diker of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) to discuss important developments in a tumultuous do-over election. Discussions between Gantz of Blue White Alliance and PM Netanyahu of Likud right wing coalition are at a critical impasse with the possibility that Netanyahu might hand in his mandate from President Rivlin. All hinges on critical meeting on October 2nd between Gantz and Netanyahu. The Arab Joint List with 10 mandates ironically endorsed Gantz, a former IDF Chief of Staff. Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu with 8 mandates wants a national secular unity government without Netanyahu leading Likud and right wing religious parties. Liberman is trying to position himself as leader of the secular nationalists to emerge as a possible future PM. Could the do-over election result in other Likud leading political figures contesting for party leadership as rotating PM.
Diker of the JCPA thinks both the April election and September do-over have been a referendum on the character of Netanyahu. Israel’s longest serving Prime Minister faces hearings in October on corruption charges. Netanyahu has petitioned for open televised hearings on the charges.
Some pundists contend that Israel cannot afford a third election which is estimated to cost upwards of one billion shekels in lost production time and lost revenues to the Israeli economy from time off, additional electoral voting processing and security costs.
Diker is the Director of the Program to Counter Political Warfare at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA). He is a former Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress. He is the editor and co-author of Defeating Denormalization—Shared Palestinian and Israeli Perspectives on a New Path to Peace, (2018).

With only a few days before the start of the Days of Awe - Yomim Noarim - what thoughts and actions may ensure that the upcoming year is a good one? Playing the 'victim card' is inconsistent with Torah; Celebrating individual and communal potential while striving for meaningful repentance are some of the topics discussed on today's reflective program.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dan Diker to discuss important developments in a tumultuous do-over election. The result is a virtual tie with the Blue White Alliance of Benny Gantz at 44 Knesset mandates versus PM Netanyahu Likud and Right-wing alliance with 55 mandates. The Arab Joint List with 10 mandates that endorsed Gantz and Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu with 8 mandates have big chips in unity government negotiations to pass the threshold of 61 mandates with Gantz and Netanyahu as rotating PMs. Liberman is trying to position himself as leader of the secular nationalists to emerge as a possible future PM.
Last minute changes make it likely that Netanyahu with his mandates may go first to try and form a possible ruling coalition. Both the April and September do-over elections Diker thinks have been a referendum on the character of Netanyahu, Israel’s longest serving Prime Minister facing hearings in October on corruption charges.
As Diker sees it the big news of the do-over election is the emergence of Israeli Arabs rejecting the corruption and “descent into a cauldron of violence” of the PLO-Fatah, Hamas and Shiite extremism of Iran. Instead they ironically opted to back a former IDF commander, Gantz, embracing Israeli Democracy. The Joint List might end up as the opposition in a Knesset with a rotating Blue White – Likud Right wing Unity government. Diker views this emergence of the Arab Joint List, less the rejectionist Balad party, the beginning of an historic shift in Israeli Arab leaders. He believes that development is bad news for the anti-Semitic International BDS movement.

One of the most difficult things for people who are becoming Jewish or returning to Judaism to deal with is the cultural aspect of Orthodox Judaism. Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon bring back Dr. Stephen Bryen, former Reagan-era Defense official, premier Washington -based military technology expert and Asia Times columnist to discuss the impacts of the Iran-backed attack on Saudi oil processing facilities and fields. Bryen contends that the US was caught off guard with "No Intel, No Plans and No Strategy" to contend with ‘rogue Iranian Revolutionary Guards who had long planned for launch of such an attack likely from proxy Shi’ite militia in Iraq. Only Israel with its superb intelligence, stealth aircraft and drones has struck at Iranian proxies and assets in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. The US, Saudi and Gulf partners do not want to trigger a regional war which would escalate with a US strike on Iranian oil production. Moreover, there is Congressional negative push back on Saudi behavior in Yemen.

Rosh HaShannah is a time when we need to do an annual evaluation on how close or far away we have drifted from living up to our goals and mission.
Throughout the year there are times that I portray my true self and others when I betray who I really am. I need to realign my life to reflect the greater me through revealing my own greater good. How can I most effectively do this and enter the time space of Rosh HaShanna with a clear sense of purpose and elevation.

Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant bring back on 9/11 Dr. Rafael Medoff, Executive Director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies. His latest book, “The Jews should be Quiet”: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and the Holocaust unveils new archival evidence of the relationship between FDR and Rabbi Stephen S Wise, leader of the American Jewish Congress and World Jewish , Congress, a Reform Rabbi and an activist Zionist in his youth. Medoff notes that as Wise grew closer to power, he refrained from criticism of Roosevelt during World War II and was complicit in silencing Jewish criticism of President’s failure to aid in the rescue of European Jews during the Holocaust. One graphic example was the March 1943 protest of 400 Orthodox Rabbis at the White House organized by the five Palestinian Revisionist Jews of the Bergson Group with a petition calling for rescue of Europe’s Jews. President FDR’s private assimilated Jewish advisers suggested ignoring, while the President left via a back entrance avoiding meeting with the Rabbis. The Rabbis were outraged which led to others to express criticism. But not Rabbi Wise. The question of why Roosevelt dismissed Jews, Medoff found in his vision of America as white, Protestant and dismissive of immigrants. That view are evident in columns published in a Georgia newspaper in the early 1920’s opposing Japanese American immigration, intermarriage and inability to assimilate in the US. That view is found is found in FDR’s Executive Order 9066 interning 120,000 American Japanese citizens. Medoff finds parallelism in FDR views of Jews. FDR’s statement following the horrific Nazi Pogrom on November 9, 1938 simply calls it unbelievable, without identifying the perpetrators and victims, Nazis and German Jews. Medoff noted between 1933 and 1938, FDR maintained cordial relations with Germany not issuing one public statement critical of Hitler’s Nazi Regime. Medoff exposes the calumnies of the FDR Administration opposing and undermining the anti-Nazi boycott mounted by Jewish and other groups permitting evasion of labelling of German products to avoid country of origin. Following, the Kristallnacht pogrom, both the US Virgin Islands Assembly and the Dominican Republic offered safe havens for German Jewish Refugees. The Dominican Republic offered over 100,000 visas. FDR Administration blocked both the Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic offers because they were to close to the US and would provide access to enter the country. The FDR White House followed that with lobbying against a Congressional bill to let in 20,000 German Jewish youths below the age of 15. An act if passed that would have saved both Ann and Margo Frank, who were eligible. The only gesture of FDR was to allow 5,000 German Jews with temporary travel visas in the US to remain here temporarily. Medoff noted that by contrast, the British Government of Munich appeaser, Neville Chamberlain allowed in 10,000 German Jewish children in the famed Kinder Transports and 15,000 young Jewish women as nannies. This contrasts with the 1939 British White Paper denying immigration to Eretz Yisrael. Medoff noted the shift in US public opinion from the 1930’s to the 1940’s during WWII. With growing allied victories at Stalingrad, North Africa, Sicily and the surrender of Italy in 1943, public opinion in the US overwhelmingly favored unlimited numbers of Jews to temporarily reside in the US. In April 1944, the FDR White House commissioned a poll that found that 70 percent this policy. The reality was that FDR admitted less than 982 European and Jewish refugees in 1944 and 1945 housed at an abandoned US Army Camp in Oswego, New York. As late as early 1944, 800,000 Hungarian Jews could have been rescued, before the country was occupied by the Nazis. Medoff suggests that this and other opportunities were squandered by FDR. When the question of why Auschwitz- Birkenau wasn’t bombed by the allies, Medoff points to excuses of critics who said that it would have results in casualties of inmates, German resilience in repairing rails. However, he noted that requests to bomb bridges betrayed that facts that Allied air forces bombed bridges, as they were difficult to repair and denying transit of troops and equipment. Bombing the bridges to Auschwitz might in his opinion have saved tens of thousands of Jews. Medoff is critical of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum exhibit, “Americans and the Holocaust” as it whitewashes with excuses for FDR given prevailing anti-immigration and anti-Semitism and priority of air bombing to destroy Nazi forces. Medoff suggests it skims over the historical record rather than the facts of FDR’s record. Those are documented in David S. Wyman’s 1984 landmark book: FDR and the Abandonment of the Jews and Medoff’s recently published book, “The Jews should be Quiet”: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and the Holocaust, published by The Jewish Publication Society and the University of Nebraska Press, both available on Amazon. For more on the David S.
