Bayit Yehudi Knesset faction leader MK Shuli Mualem on Wednesday submitted a bill to ban the organization Breaking the Silence. The notes she attached to the proposed bill say that this is “a subversive organization which is acting to change Israeli policy in ways that are not acceptable in a democratic state, by encouraging international pressure that harms the State of Israel.” Mualem noted that the actions of the BDS movement to boycott Israel receives significant support from BtS.
“Breaking the Silence is actively engaged in incitement against Israel and serves as an actual arm of the BDS campaign. This can be seen in demonstrations that have been shown recently in the media, where BDS activists physically and verbally attack IDF soldiers as they carry out their duties in Judea and Samaria,” MK Mualem wrote.
Speaking on Wednesday night, MK Mualem reiterated that “Breaking the Silence is a subversive organization that harms the State of Israel and disseminates libelous messages about it around the world. If their agenda were to really fix problems in the behavior of the IDF, they would have done it through the proper channels instead of spreading lies around the world. I’m sure that all the MKs who understand the threat of the BDS will endorse my bill, including members of the Zionist Camp.”
So far, legal experts in Israel have suggested that, even if Mualem’s bill passes—which is doubtful—it is likely to be struck down by the Supreme Court.
