US Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) was hospitalized Tuesday evening in Las Vegas after complaining of chest pain during a campaign event, according to multiple news sources in the United States. He subsequently underwent a heart procedure.
A 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, Sanders, age 78, was diagnosed with a blockage and underwent an angioplasty, according to a statement from his campaign.
“During a campaign event yesterday evening, Senator Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted,” the official campaign news release read.
“Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days,” his staff said.
“We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”
If Sanders were to win the presidency, he would become the oldest person to hold the office in American history.
