Andy Burnham, the frontrunner to succeed Keir Starmer as Labour leader and British prime minister, apologized for Labour's failure to take a harder line against Israel at the start of its military campaign in Gaza, and said Britain must now increase pressure on the Israeli government. "I know many people feel that at the start of Israel's military action in Gaza my party didn't get it right and I am sorry about that," Burnham said in an interview with The Guardian. He said Britain had been late to call for a ceasefire and that Labour needed to do better under his leadership. Burnham said he would consider further sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities and a possible ban on trade in goods from what he called "illegal settlements." He acknowledged Britain had already recognized Palestinian statehood, sanctioned Israeli ministers and what he called "violent settlers," and restricted arms licenses so that British-made munitions could not be used by the IDF, but said those measures had not gone far enough. He described the suffering in Gaza as a "scar on our collective conscience," criticized what he called a surge in settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and said Netanyahu's government was seeking to make a two-state solution impossible. Starmer announced his resignation as prime minister and Labour leader on June 22 after heavy Labour losses in local elections, and remains in office until a successor is chosen. Nominations opened today, and the contest is due to conclude before the summer recess.

Israel is prepared to resume its military campaign against Iran with even greater force if needed, Defense Minister Israel Katz said at a pilots' graduation ceremony at Hatzerim Air Base on Thursday. "The army is ready and on alert for a resumption of fighting, in order to regain air superiority and strike again in Iran, to eliminate threats, including a third time if necessary. If we have to go back, we will go back, with even greater force," Katz said. He also said Israeli forces would not withdraw from the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and the Gaza Strip. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir told the ceremony that the campaign in Iran was not over. "On the drawing board are new plans. Major operations are still expected to lie ahead of us. Be prepared," he said, adding that the military was closely monitoring developments in Iran and Lebanon and was ready for immediate action. Zamir said hundreds of Israeli Air Force aircraft had been on standby for immediate takeoff in recent weeks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at the same ceremony, said Israel's defense budget would be increased by some 350 billion shekels, about $116 billion, over the coming decade.

Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is unlikely to attend the burial of his father, Ali Khamenei, in Mashhad today, after the Revolutionary Guards advised him against it over concerns he could be targeted, CNN reported. Only family members are expected to attend the burial at the Imam Reza shrine, according to Iranian state media. Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since the February 28 strike that killed his father and several family members at the start of the war, and has issued only written statements, with no images, video, or audio released. Sources in Tehran say he is recovering from injuries sustained in the strike and that security services are limiting his exposure. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said last week that the new supreme leader was marked for death. The burial concludes a week of processions through Tehran, Qom, and the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
